Guiding Eyes for the Blind is an internationally-known, accredited guide dog training school. Its purpose is to assist blind and visually impaired men and women so as to attain independence and dignity through safe travel. The organization has three facilities in New York State, its headquarters and training center in Yorktown Heights, another training site in White Plains, and a Canine Development Center in Patterson; where they offer a 26 day program that matches blind and visually impaired people with guide dogs. The dogs are typically Labrador or Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds. All costs for the dogs and training are covered by donations; there is no charge to the student. Guiding Eyes for the Blind also offers a dog adoption program for retired or unsuitable dogs.
